When it originally saw print years back at Caliber and Oni Press, The Marquis by Guy Davis bowled me for a six, nothing else like it on the shelves. A story set in a familiar, yet skewed vision of the past, a slice of history re-written by an alien hand.
Set in the 18Th century in a decadent city seemingly stuck in winter, a city plagued with devils. Hell is open and spits out the souls of the damned who seek human hosts, sins become flesh. The Marquis is blessed/cursed, able to see the evils hidden, and sets upon a bloody one-man crusade with Gatling guns a-blazing.
Secrets are revealed, his faith is questioned and many beautifully-rendered monsters are slain.
An inventive, unique, richly conceived world all from the mind and hands of Guy Davis. But nobody made a big fuss, it was overlooked, lost in that land of 'sleeper hits'.
Thankfully, since BPRD has well and truly shown the world the shining talent of Mr.Davis, Dark Horse have given The Marquis a new home and the big brass band fanfare it deserves.
Not only do we get a deluxe reprinting of all the earlier strips, along with a mammoth sketchbook section, but 2010 brings the first of three brand-spanking new graphic novels that concludes the tale of The Marquis.
I may be preaching to the converted, but they are worth every penny of your hard-earned dosh, and every moment of your time. It will suck you in and creep you out. Go to Guy's blog and read/see more.

Nice recommendation Shane, it's a great little gem of the book sadly overlooked (like many others) let's hope it gets the attention it deserves at Dark Horse.
